  1. When is the best time to schedule a family portrait?
That's is in part determined by whether you want your portraits made in the studio or outside.  Portraits in the studio are not as difficult to schedule due to the constant weather and lighting.  Oak Haven specializes in outdoor portraiture, though, and encourages that option whenever feasible.  Outdoor portraits should be scheduled in the morning or late afternoon.  Many people like to have their portraits made in the fall with the fall color.  While the fall color is beautiful, the earth tones can conflict with the flesh tones of your family.  Because of that, summer is a great time for family portraits.

  2. What if I can't make my  scheduled time?
Oak Haven has reserved your scheduled time for your personalized session.  If you cannot make that time, or think that you will be late, please call the studio and let them know.

  3. Should we dress formally or casually?
Outdoor sessions lend themselves to casual clothing.  Casual clothing also tends to put your children at ease which leads to better portraits.  Feel free to dress however you would like to appear in your portraits.  (See next question.)

  4. How should I choose our clothing?
First you need to choose a unifying theme for your portrait.  Everyone should be either formal or casual.  Next you should lay the clothes that you would like to wear out on a bed.  See how the colors and patterns work together.  If one article of clothing stands out on the bed, it will also stand out in the portrait.  It is best to stay away from bold patterns which tend to draw attention away from the subjects.  Colors should harmonize, preferably being  in the same family.  As a general rule, long sleeves and long pants photograph better.  Casual outdoor family portraits will usually show both shoes and socks.  Choose them carefully.  In portraits which include extended family groups it can be very effective to have the individual family groups wear related clothing .

  5. What if it rains on the day of our session?
While outdoor portraits are beautiful, we are at the whim of the elements.  Contrary to popular belief, an overcast sky is perfect for portraits.  It is still good even if it is threatening to rain.  If it is raining constantly, your portrait session may have to be rescheduled.  Feel free to call Oak Haven if you are concerned about the weather.  If you have not heard that the session is canceled, assume that it is still on.

  6. How much do I have to pay at the time of the session?
The sitting fee is due at the time of the session.  Payment for orders are not due until after you have seen your previews and placed an order for your enlargements.

  7. How long does a session take?
A basic session takes about an hour.  Larger groups or more subgroups may take up to two hours.  If you are on a tight time schedule, please let Jim or Julie know before your session.

  8. When will I get to see my previews?
Previews will be ready about ten days after your session.

  9. Do I need to know what packages I want to order at the session?
You do not need to decide on your enlargements until you have reviewed your previews.  It is good to know generally what you will want to order, particularly the largest image size that you may want to order and whether you need to have your portrait formatted horizontally or vertically.
